The documentary “In Her Hands” Netflix’s Hillary and Chelsea Clinton production, won the Audience Award at the 18th Camden International Film Festival in the US.
The Festival in the city of the American state of Maine ended on September 18, but the results of the counting of votes for the Audience Awards were announced yesterday.
Filmed over two years, In Her Hands tells the story of Zarifa Ghaffari, who at 26 became one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors and the youngest ever to hold the office. The film chronicles her struggle for survival against a backdrop of uncertainty, as Western powers prepare to withdraw and the Taliban return to power.
The documentary, directed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen, premiered on September 9 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Ayazi, who is from Afghanistan, fled the country in 2021 after the Taliban took over. The director, who lives in London, attended the Camden International Film Festival.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her daughter Chelsea executive produced the documentary, which is the first non-fiction film from their company, HiddenLight Productions.
“It is an honor and I am grateful that they supported the project. It is important to focus on Afghanistan. We need more people to support the country, whether they are politicians, filmmakers, journalists. If we don’t take action, we will all regret it“, said Tamana Ayazi, according to Variety, after the screening of the documentary at the Festival.
