Actor Ryan Grantham, who worked on the series “Riverdale”, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his mother, Barbara Waite. According to the Canadian TV website CBC, he was also barred from trying a sentence progression for the next 14 years.
To arrive at the sentence, Judge Kathleen Ker took into account several details of the crime, which she called tragic and moving. The case took place on March 31, 2020, when the actor was 21 years old. At the time, Barbara was playing peeps at home when Ryan shot her with a rifle in the back of her head.
A video taken by the actor shortly after the crime was shown in court. In the images, he shows his mother’s body and confesses to killing her. After that, he would have taken cash, bought weed, made some Molotov cocktail explosives and gone to Netflix.
Then he covered his mother’s body with a sheet and went to sleep. At dawn, she placed candles around the corpse and drove off with the intention of killing Trudeau. He carried guns, ammunition, the explosives and a map of where the politician lived.
But halfway through, he gave up and went straight to a police station to confess that he had taken his mother’s life. Before, however, he considered carrying out a massacre at Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge or at Simon Fraser University, where he was a student.
The judge said that she considered in her sentence that the actor was in a negative spiral in the months leading up to the matricide. She said he was spending more and more time smoking marijuana and watching violent videos on the dark web, while feeling isolated and consumed by suicidal and homicidal impulses.
According to Ker, the actor seems genuinely sorry. In June, in his deposition, he apologized, saying that his mother was a caring, compassionate person and that she didn’t deserve what he did. She noted that the criminal was receiving psychiatric help in prison and that his behavior had been well evaluated so far.
Grantham is known for appearances on series such as “Riverdale” and “Supernatural”. He started his career as a child and also played the character Rodney James in the movie “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (2010), among other roles.
