Curtain today Friday for the 8th Athens International Poetry Festival, which took place with the participation of dozens of Greek and foreign poets from 13 countries.
The poetry festival that started on September 19 and ended today, was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Athens.
The mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyiannis, in a special ceremony that was framed by a recitation of part of the Odyssey by Nikos Kazantzakis, accompanied by the Cretan lyre, awarded the distinguished American poet Dana Joya, with the Barbara Fields-Siotis Award.
Mr. Bakoyiannis expressed his admiration for the work of Deina Joya, stressing that the poet swims against the stereotypes that want poets to be isolated from what is happening in the outside world.
“I became a poet because of two women, my mother and my muse. They sent me to get to know Greece. Athens is definitely a stopover for any lucky poet. He will find Joy and Mystery,” the award-winning poet said, among other things.
