The head of the committee responsible for sending Russian feature films to the Oscars has denounced a decision taken “behind his back” and announced his resignation.
No Russian film will be nominated for an Oscar this year, the Russian Film Academy announced Monday night, as the United States and Russia go through one of the worst crises in their history with the conflict in Ukraine.
In a statement, the Academy says it has decided not to select and send a Russian film to compete for the 2023 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
The head of the committee responsible for sending Russian feature films to the Oscars, Pavel Chukhrai, this morning denounced a decision that was made “behind his back” and announced his resignation.
Earlier yesterday, Monday, director Nikita Mikhalkov, a major authority on Russian cinema and a staunch supporter of President Vladimir Putin’s regime, had deemed Russia’s participation in the Oscars useless.
“It seems to me that choosing a film that will represent Russia in a country that, in fact, is currently denying the existence of Russia, simply does not make any sense,” he told the state-run TASS news agency.
Mikhalkov recalled that he had proposed to create a “Eurasian” equivalent of the Oscars of the American cinema and that his plan is at the stage of development.
Descended from a dynasty of famous artists in Russia, Nikita Mikhalkov, 76, was himself awarded the Oscar for best foreign film in 1995 for his film “False Sun” about the Stalinist dictatorship.
