The valuable collections of the Gallery make it a cultural organization of national scope

The opening of the exhibition “Painting treasures in Kalamata from the Museum of Modern Greek Art of the Municipality of Rhodes” carried out by the President of the Parliament of the Greeks, Konstantinos Tasoulas, in the presence of the Minister of Culture and Sports, Linas Mendoni. The exhibition, hosted at the Kalamata Dance Hall, presents valuable works by top Greek artists from the emblematic collection of the Museum of Modern Greek Art, Rhodes.

In her greeting, the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, among others, said: “Today is a special day because with the creative and exemplary cooperation of two municipalities, the Municipality of Kalamata and the Municipality of Rhodes, what should be the regional cultural policy is implemented. Two institutions join forces: One has a model space, and it is fortunate that the Megaro Chorus is used not only for the International Dance Festival but also for a number of other artistic events, and the Municipality of Rhodes has the historic Art Gallery, created by Andreas Ioannou , in very early decades of the 20th century. Haris Kambouridis put his own stamp, so that today the Art Gallery of Rhodes is a jewel for the island and at the same time a carrier of an extroverted presence.

The valuable collections of the Gallery make it a cultural organization of national scope. Here, we have the emergence of regional cultural policy and contemporary creation practiced by the agencies themselves, with the support of the State. At the Ministry of Culture, we are trying – the Recovery Fund gave us the possibility of additional funding – to draw up strategic plans for the cultural development of each city, each region, completely combining its cultural heritage with modern cultural creation. Priority was given to regions, such as Eastern Macedonia – Thrace, North and South Aegean, because there were eligibility that the program justifies. And we move on. We believe that Culture is one.

Creators, dealing with the past, interpreting monuments and cultural heritage in a different way, are inspired in contemporary creation. We are interested in the parallel development and ultimately the osmosis of the two sectors to reach what should be regional cultural development. In the Art Gallery of Rhodes, the Ministry of Culture invested approximately 800,000, from the Recovery Fund program to proceed with the maintenance and further promotion of its collections. I close with the hope that this creative synergy that begins today, between the two municipal authorities, of Kalamata and Rhodes, will continue throughout Greece. The Art Gallery of Rhodes has the wealth and the ability to teach modern Greek art, at a national level. The great Greek artists, who were no less than the great painters of the European space, teach us, in addition to Art, aesthetics, morals, and ethics.”

The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni
