Our “own” Nana Mouschouri was honored with the biggest German “Audience Award” for her entire work

Another honor in an exuberant career for the great singer

Once again the Nana Moushuri confirms that it is an artistic as well as a commercial phenomenon. After 300 gold and platinum records, after sales of 300 million records or CDs, after countless awards, the Greek singer, who lives permanently in Geneva, is honored this year with the biggest German “Audience Award” for her entire work. The award took place on Friday in Leipzig in a spectacular ceremony, with the participation of dozens of well-known artists. The presenter of the evening was Florian Silbereisen, one of the most popular stars of German pop music.

“Goldene Henne” means “Golden Hen” and the name is rather strange, but there is an explanation: The award was established in 1991, after the German Reunification, in memory of the comedic actress and singer Helga Hannemann, who was famous in the former East Germany and popular muse had nicknamed her “Big Helga” and “Hen”, reciprocating the satirical mood. At first only East Germans were honored with the “Golden Hen”. But the public response was so great that the award was soon opened up to Western artists, eventually establishing itself as the most important Audience Award in the German music industry.

Award for City as well

Nana Mouschouri has stood out in Germany since 1962, with the song Weiße Rosen aus Athen (“White Roses from Athens”), which was a huge success. This is the German arrangement of the song “Like you whistle three times” to the music of Manos Hatzidakis, with German lyrics by Hans Bradtke. Numerous records and countless concerts and tours followed. “This woman is a legend,” said Florian Zilbereisen, handing over the award to Nana Moushuri, with the audience applauding on their feet. She, moved, thanked the organizers, to point out that “my career had actually started here, in Germany, with the song Weiße Rosen aus Athen”.

However, other artists also received the coveted Goldene Henne award. Among them was the East German group City, which had previously (and even before the Reunification of Germany) had great success in Greece with the song “Am Fenster”. In the category of young artists, the Goldene Henne award was awarded to 26-year-old Sophia, a jewelry artist by profession, who from 2021 started posting her songs on Instagram and TikTok. She quickly gained tens of thousands of followers and in October 2021 her first single was released.
