Seu Jorge speaks for the 1st time about attacks on a show: ‘Rudeness racist’

Singer Seu Jorge spoke for the first time on Monday night (17) about the racist attack he suffered during a show held in Porto Alegre, on Friday (14). He shared a nine-minute video on Instagram, with the flag of Rio Grande do Sul in the background, explaining what happened.

The singer said he was hired by Grêmio Náutico União, a traditional club in Porto Alegre, to perform a show reserved for members only. He said it was a gala dinner “with people very, very well dressed for the occasion” and there were no blacks except the staff.

“The black people I met were only the employees who, something that caused me a lot of species, I heard that they were forbidden to look at me or talk to me when I arrived at the concert venue”, said Seu Jorge, who hugged and took pictures with all the staff.

Seu Jorge said he was very happy to be back in the city, but when he was behind the stage he heard boos and curses. He said he realized he wouldn’t be able to come back to do the “famous encore”, but he returned to the stage alone in a respectful manner to thank everyone.

“Actually what I want to say here is that I didn’t recognize the city I learned to love and respect. It wasn’t the city I knew, from the countless shows”, he said. “Actually what I witnessed was a lot of gratuitous hate and a lot of racist rudeness.”

The singer thanked the numerous messages of support he received from people from Porto Alegre and the repudiation of the behavior of some at the club, which, according to him, contributed to the shame of others present. The attacks came after the singer spoke about lowering the age of criminal responsibility.

“It is very good to know that at least after all this our connection has not been broken and will not be broken. Now we will be much stronger and more united in the intense fight against racism and all forms of prejudice and discrimination”, he said.

The singer said that he is even more united in the fight against racism, misery and lack of opportunities in Brazil that affect blacks. “We will be in the fight together denouncing and fighting all types of typification of our people and responding with excellence, preparation, courage, wisdom and diplomacy. We will never, ever bow to racism and intolerance whatever it may be”, said the artist.
