Today it is part of the Kozani-Larissa National Road, as well as one of the two bridges that pass over the waters of the artificial lake Polyphytos
It was November 1976 when the inauguration of the longest bridge for the time in Greece and in the Balkans, with its total length reaching 1372 meters and its width 13. The High Bridge of Serbia was made to unite the two banks of the then newly created artificial lake Polyfytos, a long and narrow artificial lake in the Aliakmonas river valley, once again changing the geomorphological map of the country. In fact, for many years after its construction, it was considered one of the largest in all of Europe.
When the works for its construction began in 1972, the lake had not yet taken its final shape, with the result that the shoes of its 27 giant columns were built on solid ground like its foundation. Its arched shape and the empty interior of its columns were an element of safety and stability, especially in relation to all previous bridges whose length did not exceed 250m and were straight. Gravel from the existing natural river material was used in the shoes and embankments of the foundation, while the overall materials that contributed to the construction were strong concrete, iron and steel.
Today it is a part of the Kozani-Larissa National Road, as well as one of the two bridges that pass over the waters of the artificial lake Polyfytos and join its two sides.
But the construction of the lake was fatal, as it forcibly forced the inhabitants of the settlement of Neraida to relocate with the closing of the dam.
Their long story begins in SE Pontus in the Sebastia area, where with the exchange of 1922 they left all their possessions and with a suitcase in hand settled near Lefkara, Kozani. But in 1929, they decide to go down the hill, and build their house from scratch, near the Aliakmonas river, taking advantage of the tax offered by the wet element of the river. They cultivate their fields and engage in animal husbandry, having a good life in a fairy-tale place, which the then Despot of Kozani, Joachim, was impressed and named Neraida.
