Lady D(ebicki): Annoying Princess Diana, But Great Actress in ‘The Crown’

Despite her enviable career, the blonde beauty has always protected her private life

In its fifth season “The Crown”, sometimes it’s hard to believe that it’s not Lady Di herself on screen. It’s about the actress Elizabeth Debicki. The 32-year-old Australian plays Princess Diana in her final years, taking over the role from Britain’s Emma Corinne, who went from being a largely unknown actress to making headlines.

However, Debicki’s case is different: She had already appeared in films with famous directors such as Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan), Christopher Nolan (Tenet, with Robert Pattinson) and Steve McQueen (in Widows, opposite Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez).

Despite her enviable career, the blonde beauty has always protected her private life. In fact, now she has one more reason, playing the “people’s princess” in the series “The Crown”, which has garnered more attention than ever from the media.

“I’ve always liked to protect my private life. I feel that what I want to put out into the world is my work, and I’ve always believed – and it’s the way I approach my work – that me and the work are separate things. I just want people to know me for my work,” she explained in a 2018 interview with Australian Vogue after the premiere of her film “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” also starring Mick Jagger.

Debicki was born in Paris in 1990, but she and her parents moved to Melbourne, Australia when she was just five years old. There, she grew up in a European-style environment, which differed sharply from what other children her age experienced. Both her mother and father were dancers (he is of Polish descent and she is Australian of Irish descent). The actress wanted to study history but turned to acting and trained at the Victorian College of the Arts in Australia.

In 2011, shortly after her graduation, Australian director Baz Luhrmann took an interest in her. Two years later, he appeared in “The Great Gatsby”, a major production with a cast of Hollywood stars.

Debicki’s close relationship with the fashion world is the only exception to her low profile. At the end of last year, “Women’s Wear Daily” published the news that the actress became the ambassador of the Dior Jewelry brand. The actress has close ties to the fashion house, having attended fashion shows at the invitation of the label’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, whose designs the actress often wears on the red carpet.

In fact, at the premiere of the film “The Crown” in London, Debicki posed in a black Dior dress, which took 300 hours to make. On the one hand, it was reminiscent of the famous “revenge dress”, designed by Christina Stambolian, which the Princess of Wales wore in 1994 when the news of her husband’s infidelity broke, and on the other hand, her dress was inspired by Catherine’s evening dress Walker, worn by Diana at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987.

Andrew Morton, Diana’s biographer and author, said that Debicki’s performance was irritating. “It was like being in the room with her again 30 years ago,” he said.

It remains to be seen how the actress will handle this new stage of her career and if she will be able to continue to keep her personal life private…
