Reports of the death of cinema are exaggerated, according to the Canadian director and producer James Cameron.

While the pandemic has changed the business model for Hollywood movies, James Cameron took to the stage at the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water in London to declare that the cinema experience is back and healthier than ever .

“Thank you for coming. I don’t know about you, this is a pretty surreal moment for me that we’ve finished the film,” James Cameron told the audience at London’s Odeon West End theater, as reported by Deadline.

“Five years of production and five years covering a really dark period,” added the director.

“The pandemic hit us, we closed completely. I felt despondent that this art form that I love, to which I have devoted four decades, is over. We finally got back to work, but we didn’t know if there would be movie theaters. It had finished; But here we are,” Cameron stressed.

“Cinemas are filling up again and moviegoers around the world have said unequivocally that we need it,” added the Canadian director, noting, “We need that ability to gather to sit in these big dark spaces and dream with the eyes wide open in a cinema. For me tonight is not about a new Avatar movie. It’s about cinema and here you are in your good clothes. It is a celebration of this art form that we love so much. She’s back, she’s alive and she’s as wonderful as she’s ever been.”

The first movie “Avatar” was released in 2009 and grossed $2.9 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film of all time.
