The actress was included in the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women
Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas told BBC 100 Women that she received equal pay with her male co-star for the first time in her 22-year career for her role in the upcoming US espionage series Citadel.
The actress, who was hugely successful in India and appeared in more than 60 Bollywood films, moved to Hollywood about a decade ago and is one of the few Indian actresses with a career in the entertainment industry in the US.
However, the actress, producer and entrepreneur revealed that even when she was famous in India, she earned only 10% of her co-star’s salary.
“There was never equal pay in the Bollywood. The pay gap is wide, practically wide. And so many women are still faced with this,” she said in her interview with the BBC.
“The generation of female actors that I belong to demanded equal pay. We asked, but we didn’t get them,” he stressed.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who has been named in the BBC’s 100 Women of 2022 list, has told how as a young actress in the Indian film industry she accepted deep-seated patriarchy as “normal”.
“I thought it was perfectly normal to sit for hours on set while my co-star decided to come on set when we were shooting,” he noted.
The interview follows the announcement of the BBC’s annual list of 100 inspiring and influential women.
This year’s list includes global music phenomenon Billie Eilish, Ukrainian President Olena Zelenska’s wife, actress Selma Blair, Iranian mountaineer Elnaz Rekabi and Ghanaian author Nana Darkoa Shekiama.
