Actress Jessica Chastain stated that she thinks it’s great when women can decide not to have children.

The Oscar-winning actress said that partly because of being raised as a child and grandchild by teenage mothers, she has an understanding of a woman’s right to choose when or whether to have children.

“It’s very important to me that women have access to contraception and freedom over it,” she told the Guardian newspaper.

“The problem is that my mother, my grandmother and all the women in my family got pregnant when they were 17 because they were never given that option.

Some tests are expensive. They also couldn’t rely on men to do their duty, to be responsible. So it’s very important to me that women have access to contraception and freedom over it,” she continued.

“Because I know a lot of people freak out when women decide not to have children. But I think that’s great.”

She added that there are almost 20 years between her and her younger brother, as her mother later had children with Chastain’s stepfather and she herself had her two children after the age of 40.

Chastain also spoke about her stance on women who have worked with alleged sex offenders in the film and television industry.

“It’s complicated,” said the actress, who has been vocal about sexual harassment in entertainment. “Even now, with #MeToo, people will say, ‘Are you mad at this actress, who spoke up for this person?’ I will never be angry at a woman who had to do what she had to do to support herself and survive because she plays by different rules than men.”
