The configurations of the surrounding space and the network of routes now provide universal access to the disabled and disabled people.
It emerges Castle state of Mystras with the positive opinion of the museological and museographic study by the Central Archaeological Council (KAS).
The Palace becomes a museum-exhibition space that can be visited as, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, the configurations of the surrounding area and the network of routes now provide Catholic access to the disabled and to disabled people.
In particular, the square in front of the Palace has been restored, as it was in the first half of the 15th century. – the space functioned as an administrative center, a temporary seat of the imperial administration – while the existing atraposa is receiving improvement interventions, in order to ensure access to the Palace for people with reduced mobility, with a special transport vehicle and via an external elevator. All areas of the monument are completely open to visitors.
The promotion program of the Castle State of Mystras, implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, with a total budget of approx. 7,500,000 eurosis financed, mainly, by resources of the Recovery Fund and by the Regional Operational Program of Peloponnese – ESPA 2014-2020.
“Universal accessibility,” said the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, “It is a priority of the government. A priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports is the access of people with disabilities and disabled people to archaeological sites, museums, cultural infrastructures, in general. Particular emphasis is placed on places included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list, such as the Citadel of Mystras. The interventions to improve and expand accessibility, but also to increase the number of visitors to the archaeological site, are part of the overall framework of the overall plan for the protection and promotion of the Mystras monumental complex. In addition to the organization of the exhibition, in the Palace and the project of universal accessibility, the Ministry of Culture has included Mystras in the project financed by the Recovery Fund, which is about dealing with the effects of the climate crisis on the monuments. In this context, the fire protection and fire extinguishing system is implemented for the overall shielding of Kastropolitia”.
The accessibility study provides two main routes:
H first one it starts from the Lower Country of Mystras, along the stone-paved central cobblestone and through the Gate of Monemvasia it ends, from the southeast, at the Palace.
THE second is ensured, through the construction road, which starts outside the walls and is connected to the parking area, through an unpaved municipal road. In order to serve the visitors and the orderly operation of the space, traffic corridors, as well as outdoor spaces-platforms are formed. In direct connection with the main corridor for the movement of visitors, the creation of three squares-platforms is planned, at points that gather special interest or serve stops, along the visitor’s path. The largest plateau-square, which is fully accessible to wheelchairs, is planned south of the Palace, as a reminder of the central square of the Palace. It is an outdoor hub and reference point for the Palace. At the same time, a secondary platform is formed to serve the central entrance to the Palace, for the public.
The project “Highlight – Exhibition Tour of the Palace of the Despots in the Archaeological Site of Mystras” is structured in three parts: The functional completion of the Palace complex, the creation of public service infrastructure and ensuring accessibility, the exhibition program.
THE integration of the overall program in Mystras is provided for 2025. At the end of 2023, the exhibition will be delivered to the Palace of the Despots.
