Two music documentaries qualified for Oscars

A total of 144 films were eligible in the Best Documentary category

The “Moonage Daydream” which explores the creative and musical journey of David Bowie and the “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, A Song,” which examines the life of Leonard Cohen through the lens of one of the most popular songs of modern times, is among 15 documentaries shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

‘Moonage Daydream’ is a combination of archival Bowie footage shown for the first time and live concert footage. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, with critics praising its experimental, unconventional structure.

The “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, A Song» showcases the songwriter and his era, the song’s dramatic journey from label rejection to chart-topping rise, as well as moving testimonials from influential artists for whom “Hallelujah” has become Cohen’s personal touchstone.

In total 144 films were eligible in the Best Documentary category.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. The awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, and will be broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
