“What we saw were scenes worthy of Netflix, Narcos,” Gentiloni said in an interview with RAI
The corruption scandal rocking the European Parliament, in which suspects were found with suitcases full of cash, is like something out of the crime TV series ‘Narcos’, European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said today.
“What we saw were scenes worthy of Netflix, Narcos,” Gentiloni said in an interview with Italian public broadcaster RAI, calling the so-called “Targetgate” corruption scandal “disgraceful” and damaging to the reputation of EU institutions. and money laundering.
“There is a need to react, there is a need to let the Belgian judiciary do its job and there is a need to react perhaps with even more effective transparency rules, especially for the European Parliament,” he said.
Earlier this month, Belgian authorities accused four people linked to the European Parliament of offering cash and gifts from World Cup host Qatar to influence decision-making.
Qatar denies any wrongdoing.
The suspects are the Italian former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, the Greek MEP Eva Kaili, Panzeri’s former assistant and member of the European Parliament staff Francesco Giorgi and the Italian non-governmental organization director Niccolo Figa-Talamanga.
Investigators searched 19 residences and the offices of the European Parliament between 9 and 12 December. A source close to the investigation stated that 1.5 million euros were seized during these investigations.
