Following its award at the Cannes Film Festival, Prayers for the Stolen was soon acquired by Netflix. It is a Mexican drama by Tatiana Huezo and makes her feature film debut.
In Prayers for the Stolen, the path to adulthood conflicts with reality
In the movie, we meet three girlfriends as they gradually enter adolescence. They all live in an area of Mexico dominated by drug cartels and human trafficking. Farmers in the area make a living by cultivating certain opioid plants and earning only $ 15 per shift. But many spouses have left looking for work elsewhere and leaving their families behind. With communication outside the area being difficult and with the constant danger around them, the women and girls of the area find their own ways to defend themselves.
When some drug dealers take one of the girls, the others are forced to cut their hair short so as not to aim. They are constantly hiding and anxious about each other’s fate. At the same time, however, they grow up, become adults and want to learn what is outside of this life that they have learned. In their minds there is still the possibility of a different, beautiful life, even if everyone around them tries to convince them otherwise.
The film explores the mother-daughter relationship under these circumstances
Elsewhere in the world, a mother and daughter may have had lighter conversations. There, however, every mother is responsible for teaching her daughter how to protect herself. Together they build underground hiding places for the girls, where they go every time a stranger comes to their house. They learn to communicate with the eye and grow much faster than they should.
It is no surprise that the film received such a warm response to its festival journey.
It will also be available on the Netflix platform for the global public on November 17.
