Sir Anthony Hopkins is celebrating 47 years of sobriety with a new, inspirational video, in which he encourages others to “keep fighting” and stay strong.

In his latest Instagram post, the 82-year-old Oscar-winning actor also wished us a “Happy New Year!”

“I just want to wish you a Happy New Year and also tell you that I’m celebrating 47 years of sobriety today,” the actor said to his fans.

He continued: “I’m a recovering alcoholic and for you out there, know there are people struggling… Be kind to yourself, be proud of your life.”

The “Silence of the Lambs” star went on to recall that he was in a hopeless state of despair and probably didn’t have much time to live while still caught in the throes of addiction.

One day in 1975, however, he realized that “something was really wrong with himself”, but at first he did not know that “it was a kind of mental, physical condition called alcoholism … addiction”.

His post was overwhelmed by thousands of messages from his fans, but also from many famous people such as Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman and others.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who has been sober since 2008 after her own tough battle with cocaine and alcohol, praised the actor for being a “bright beacon” and inspiration on her own “journey to recovery”.

Hopkins began in the British theater in 1960 and made his international breakthrough in 1968 in the historical drama The Lion In Winter, opposite Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn. In 1992, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Hannibal Lecter in the film The Silence of the Lambs.

He has since been nominated four times for an Oscar – for ‘Remains Of the Day’, released in 1993, for ‘Nixon’, released in 1995, for ‘Amistad’, released in 1997, and for ‘The Two Popes » of 2019.
