by

Scientific meeting with free admission for the public on Friday

A scientific meeting, open to the public and with free entry, is organized by the National Gallery on Friday 13/1, on the subject of Theosophism’s influence on the visual arts. The meeting takes place in the context of the retrospective exhibition “Konstantinos Parthenis. The Ideal Greece of his Painting”, with lecturers eight art historians and the participation of the director of EPMAS, Syragos Tsiara, who signs the idea and the scientific curation of the topic that will be developed.

Speakers’ presentations will focus on issues such as the eclectic affinities of Theosophism – an amalgam of occult, philosophical, social and religious beliefs – with the particular spirituality that pervades the work of Parthenis. Also, topics such as the wider reception of irrational tendencies by Greek intellectuals and artists during the first decades of the 20th century, but also the relationship of Theosophism with the art of the Russian avant-garde, abstraction, will concern this scientific meeting, in the context of which the work of the pioneer of abstract painting Hilma of Klint (1862-1944) and the first director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Hila Ribey (1890-1967), will be presented for the first time in Greece.
