For the needs of the film, the actor had to spend many hours on make-up and this was too much for him
The famous actor Jim Carrey confesses that he needed training from the CIA in order to withstand the torture of filming “The Grinch”.
The actor was one of the most sought-after movie stars in the 1990s, as the artist excelled mainly in the comedy genre, where he stood out for his unique humor, funny gestures and grimaces.
One of the films he starred in was ‘The Grinch’. Jim Carrey he took on the role of this green creature, who hated Christmas. However, to portray him, the actor had to spend many hours in make-up and this was too much for him.
“The makeup lasted over 8 hours. I felt like I was being buried alive,” he recalls. “The first day I went back to my trailer and told director Ron Howard I couldn’t do the movie.” Jim Carrey was claustrophobic with costumes, make-up and prosthetics.
The director saw that everything could fall apart for him, as the widow of the creator of the film’s character wanted Carey for the role. “We had to keep the make-up and we had to keep Jim. To find a way to enable him to endure what felt like torture,” explained the producer.
And the idea they came up with was to bring in someone special from the CIA to train him for the needs of the role. “Maybe a CIA specialist could teach Jim Carrey how to survive the Grinch’s green makeup the same way he would teach spies how to survive a hostile interrogation,” said the producer.
“So they brought in a guy who trained CIA agents to withstand torture. With his help I was able to overcome my fears,” added Jim Carrey.
He and the CIA agent were locked in a room and he taught him how to control his thoughts, avoid pain and suffering. Although the actor says that the songs of the Bee Gees also brought him out of this trance. “I don’t know why, but the Bee Gees made me happy,” Jim Carrey said.
