Why do not you need detox after Christmas meal

by

Christmas days are ideal to socialize a little more and “throw it out a little”. But what happens when you over-excite not only the limit you have set for yourself, but also the limit that your body can tolerate?

You did it, admit it. And then maybe you felt remorse and probably turned to Dr. Google in despair, who told you that to deflate and get rid of the pounds of the holidays is enough one detox diet. I hope you did not believe him.

Diet and Christmas

Yes, Christmas is a good time to eat well. And yes, the healthiest diet is the one that can keep your body in nutrition and your soul in balance. You do not need to put your body in the process of deprivation, not only because it may deprive you of essential nutrients, but also because it may affect your overall mood. And Christmas (like any other day of course) is a very good time to distance yourself from your worries and have a carefree and enjoyable time. Like when you were a kid.

Diet is not just what you put on your plate

It is important to keep in mind that diet is not just about the food you put on your plate and the ingredients it contains. If when you hear the word all that comes to mind are specific macro – and micro – nutrients or food categories, then take it another way.

Nutrition is also your attitude towards your food, how it makes you feel but also the degree of sociability that it allows you to have. So note that if your diet makes you feel remorse or deprivation, then it is not healthy. If it limits you socially then it is not healthy. If it consumes a lot of your energy and mental reserves, then this way of feeding simply not it’s for you.

So everything is allowed?

What is allowed and what is not is determined by you and the goals you set. If you do not mind closing the Christmas season with a few extra pounds, then you can leave for a while and just have fun doing what satisfies you. If you are interested in maintaining or reducing your body weight, then you can still have a good time, but keep the measure so that you do not feel the need to shrink and limit yourself later.

Why not just do a detox

Because quite simply this part has already been taken over by the systems of your body, with the main protagonists being the liver, the kidneys and the digestive system. In other words, your body does not need juice cleanses to “flush out toxins”– the process of detoxification is part of the normal processes performed by your body. Bottomline, the body is self-repairing and does not need green juices or detox diets (yes, it’s so great to watch out for that!).

And what can you do (if not detox)?

For a start, keep in mind that what leads to weight gain is surplus energy (in other words, consuming more calories than you will burn during the day) and not individual foods. If you eat a little melomakarono but reduce the calories of lunch by a slice of bread or go out for an hour of walking, then we will probably not talk about a significant excess of calories.

Equally important, however, is the frequency with which you add something extra to the menu of the day. If one day a week you happen to eat a piece of cake or cake without then going to the gym, again this will not translate into extra weight. The problem, if we can call it that, starts if you decide, for Christmas sake, to add something extra to the menu for an extended period of time (and obviously when we say “something” we do not mean a banana or a light yogurt, right?).

1) Exercise

Try to strengthen or even maintain it your physical activityOf course, this does not mean that one hour in the gym is enough to consume as much as you want and what you want without the risk of weight gain.

2) Hydration

Another tip that will help you is consumption plenty of fluids (water, tea, herbs) that will help your body get rid of any retention caused by the days. Keep in mind that a day of irregularities can not immediately lead to weight gain. The number you might see on the scales the next day has been caused by a mild fluid retention which will gradually subside if you maintain the measure in the coming days.

3) Mindfulness

Try to separate the desire for a Christmas treat (and by all means embrace it and treat yourself) from eating something simply because it was in front of you at a family table. This way, you will be able to enjoy what your body really wants, and you will not have to burden yourself with something that you did not intend to eat anyway.

4) Make sure you enjoy (and) other things

Go for a walk in the market, see your friends and loved ones, make a nice gift to someone, go on an excursion, make an appointment for a massage and generally treat yourself in other ways besides eating. Maybe this will create a feeling of fullness and will turn your attention to some more joys of life.

Enjoy!
