Joseph Fiennes is going to play England’s football manager, Gareth Southgatein a new play written by “Sherwood” screenwriter James Graham.

Fiennes, known for his roles in the series “The Handmaid’s Tale” and the film “Shakespeare in Love”, will star in the play at the National Theater in London. Rupert Gould will direct the theatrical production.

“It’s time to change the game” reads the project description. “The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of losses. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game?’

“With the world’s worst penalty shootout record, Gareth Southgate knows he must ‘open up’ his mind and face years of pain to take club and country back to the promised land.”

Southgate, who started his career as a footballer, missed a penalty at the 1996 European Championship during the semi-final between England and Germany when the match went into extra time. Germany won both the semi-final and the final and the failure became one of the defining moments of his career.

After retiring as a player in 2006, Southgate became a manager and took over the England national team in 2016.

England have not won a World Cup since 1966.

“Telling this story of the national game on the stage of the National Theater is just the greatest thrill, if a daunting responsibility,” said James Graham.
