“The start of the restoration works at the Holy Church of St. Spyridon in the city of Lefkada, with the implementation body being the Directorate of Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetoloakarnania and Lefkada, according to the construction contract signed on 08-07-2022, after the delivery of a copy of the keys to the church from Mr. Spyridon Charlabas“, announced the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

According to the ministry, the operation “RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH OF SAINT SPYRIDON IN LEFKADA”, with a budget of 910,000 euros, is co-financed by the Operational Program “Ionian Islands 2014-2020” of the Region of the Ionian Islands and concerns the restoration of one of the most remarkable and important religious monuments of Lefkada, in order to render to the public architecturally and morphologically restored, safe and statically adequate according to the approved studies.

“The tireless multi-year efforts to save the monument have now come to fruition, as after the visit of the minister, Linas Mendoni, to the island in 2020, the inclusion of the restoration project of the temple in collaboration with the Region of the Ionian Islands was launched“, is noted in the announcement of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

“In the legal proceedings, the assistance of the I. Metropolis of Lefkada, the Real Estate Service, the Agrini office of the State Legal Council was important, while the interest of the residents of Lefkada was undiminished. The kind cooperation of all agencies contributed to the work of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which will complete the restoration and promotion of an emblematic monument for Lefkada“, the statement added.
