A collection of clothes that move by themselves and wrap around the wearer’s body was created by Pola Demianiuk, as part of her degree in fashion design at the Swedish School of Textiles.

For the “Soft Assembly” collection, Demianiuk applied soft robotics, a subfield of robotics that focuses on technologies that mimic living organisms. The creations unfold and wrap around the body without requiring movement on the part of the wearer, which potentially has advantages for those with mobility difficulties.

“The concept challenges the reality in which the garment is static and the body is the active agent in the dressing process. Through this approach, the garment helps to dress the body,” said Demianiuk, speaking to Dezeen. “The prospects of this technology go beyond the realm of fashion. A solution that this project brings could be the well-being of immobile users and those who care for them, with assistive devices or independent smart clothing,” he underlined.
