Shoji Morimoto, now 38, a Japanese man, used to hear from relatives, classmates and colleagues that he was doing nothing. He is the type of person who just stands idly by and lets others take the initiative.
So, after university and after changing one job after another without meaning, he finally decided to make a profession what everyone believed in him. The self-proclaimed lazy man opened a Twitter account under the pseudonym “Do Nothing Rent-a-Man” and began offering his services to the world.
“I rent myself not to do the slightest thing, which means I do not make much effort,” he told CBS News. And yet, almost every day he has up to three appointments.
“I do not open a debate. “I respond to small talk, but that’s it,” he says.
Instead, he has turned down jobs where he was asked to clean houses, “be a friend”, put on a washing machine, visit a haunted house and pose naked.
But he sat in the cold to make the audience into a street musician, accompanied very shy people to shops and restaurants, and ate a cake with a lonely soul who had a birthday.
“People use me in different ways. Some feel lonely. Some people think that it is a pity to go somewhere nice on their own. “They want someone to share their impressions,” he explains.
One of these days, he met a 30-year-old woman, who is one of his regular customers. After the necessary greetings, they sat down to drink coffee. They were silent.
The client, who preferred not to reveal her name, explained that the hired man offers her a safe place, where no one judges her, does not expect anything from her and does not need to talk.
“Women in Japan are usually very worried about what others think and not being a burden to others. It is exhausting. “So getting rid of this obsession is valuable.”
Moritomo has almost 250,000 followers, has written four books and has become a television series.
Each appointment costs about $ 100 (customers pay for transportation and food), and he estimates he has made more than 3,000 so far.
As his success has become known and he himself is famous, there are many who rushed to copy him. But he insists it is not a real job. Nothing is more fun than doing nothing, he says.
