How to bring the Danish hygge home again

by

As Autumn is at its peak I automatically think about how to prepare my house making it warmer and more cozy, not only practically but also aesthetically.

In general, items such as blankets, pillows and candles add to the calm and warmth of the house by doing what the Danes call, hygge.

Let’s remember what Hygge is
Let me first clarify that Hygge is not a style of decoration, but more a way of life. Without going into too much detail, it is a Danish (and Norwegian) word for a mood of warmth and tranquility with feelings of well-being and satisfaction.

So, when we talk about hygge and home: it means to create a peaceful, serene and welcoming space in which you will enjoy and calm down.

The way you decorate your home can help you achieve a Hygge feel, along with some matte moves. You know, I’m talking about the feeling you get when you put on your pajamas, after a warm bath while lying on clean sheets? This is Hygge!

Candles

Candles are a big part of the Hygge atmosphere. They say Danes burn more candles a year than any other country on earth. Candles create a soft and warm light and make everything more attractive.

Blankets and pillows

It’s hard to be comfortable (or Hygge) without them. Throws on the couch and chairs, baskets with cozy blankets make the house extremely warm and welcoming even for you who live there – especially for your guests.

Comfort food and drink

Hygge is also about nutrition. If you visit a Danish house, you will be asked immediately if you want to drink or eat something. And it will usually be comfort food, such as homemade bread or cake.

Hygge has to do with treating your home like a haven from everyday life.

More stuff that is Hygge

If you still have trouble understanding this abstract but “warm” concept, Observer has a list of more things (or concepts) that are absolutely Hygge and you can use (most of them) in your decor.

  • Fireplaces
  • Comfortable chairs
  • Things made of wood, or ceramics
  • Many books
  • Large sweaters
  • Picnic
  • Confidence
  • Christmas
  • Wool socks
  • Gardens
  • Dogs
  • Pop corn
  • Autumn
  • Scarf
  • Pajamas
  • Hot chocolate with marshmallows

So, throw another log on the fire, curl up on the couch with a nice hot cocoa and dedicate some quality time to your friends.
