The victims had left clear clues about the Church of Scientology’s practices in their statements, saying that after reporting rape they were followed, threatened and photographed against their will.
The competent authorities of Los Angeles had accused Masterson in 2020, who is known from his role in the American serial sitcom “That ’70s Show”, for the rape of three young women using violence or threats. Specifically, Masterson was alleged to have raped a 23-year-old woman in 2001, a 28-year-old woman in early 2003 and another 23-year-old woman late that year. The allegations were made during the height of the #MeToo movement in Hollywood and had attracted the interest of the world and the media.
After the first trial was canceled last November due to a miscarriage of justice, the 47-year-old actor was acquitted of one charge and convicted of the other two rapes. The retrial lasted more than a month and jurors had to deliberate a week before finding him guilty of two counts of rape.

Masterson, who was accompanied by his equally famous wife Bijou Phillips, was remanded in custody after the verdict and now faces 30 years to life in prison.
The alleged rapes took place at the height of his fame, when he was starring alongside Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace and Laura Prepon in the TV series ‘That ’70s Show’. He denied the accusations during the trial while at the same time pointing out that his status as a member of the Church of Scientology created a negative climate against him.
