Kevin Spacey, who goes on trial in London this month on sexual assault charges, told a German magazine he expects to be cleared and intends to return to acting as soon as that happens.
“I know there are already people out there willing to hire me once I’m acquitted of these charges in London,” Spacey said in a recent interview with Zeit Magazin. “The instant that happens, they’ll be ready to go.”
Spacey, 63, and two-time Academy Award winner,’s acting career has come crashing down since he was first accused of sexual assault in 2017, just as the #MeToo movement was gaining momentum. In the first public allegation, actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed News that Spacey sexually harassed him when he was 14. Rapp sued Spacey, and in October a Manhattan federal grand jury cleared Spacey of physical assault in that case.
When other allegations against Spacey, including more than a dozen allegations of sexual harassment, surfaced, Netflix dropped him from the series he starred in, “House of Cards.” His talent agency and publicity agent dumped him, and he was dropped from Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World.” Spacey has withdrawn from public life, and a representative said he would seek psychological evaluation and treatment.
Spacey goes on criminal trial in London from June 28, facing multiple sexual assault allegations relating to incidents that allegedly took place between 2001 and 2013. He denies all allegations.
In the Zeit Magazin interview, Spacey said he is confident he will be cleared. “Once the facts are examined, these things fall apart,” he told the magazine. “That’s what happened in the Rapp trial and that’s what will happen in this case.”
Since the 2017 allegations, Spacey has been involved in a few projects, including the Italian film “The Man Who Drew God” and a Croatian film about the country’s first president, Franjo Tudjman, titled “Once Upon a Time in Croatia”.
Spacey told the magazine that he doubts he can rehabilitate his reputation, but that he believes he will be able to resume his professional life after the trial. And he hinted that he will be remembered by posterity for his work as an actor.
“Ten years from now it won’t mean anything,” Spacey said of the allegations. “My work will outlive me, and it is my work that will be remembered.”
