Festa de São João root or nutella? This was the crux of the issue in the discussion (almost an argument) between Astrid Fontenelle and Gabriela Prioli, on Saia Justa (GNT). It all started when the presenter, in a venting tone, said: “I’m going to São João to dance to forró, eat boiled peanuts… I got there, it was an axé party! No, I can’t!”.
Gabriela then countered it. “You can’t,” said the lawyer firmly, more of a lawyer than ever. She defended the theory that Astrid was expressing her subjective view of what a “real” June party would be, which would not necessarily be a rule.
“Part of your subjective judgment. What you were expecting was to get there and find something else. What maybe people were expecting is just what was offered.” Prioli concluded his reasoning: “I think what is worth thinking about first is what is the traditional São João? So, what is the time frame that we are going to establish to say what São João is?”.
Astrid countered: “Perhaps we have a temporal framework for the History books, but, for me, tradition is not just the History book, tradition is practice, what it became when it arrived here in Brazil”. Prioli interrupted his colleague: “You say ‘for me it is’… The death of my world is not the death of the world!”
Annoyed, the presenter defended her position. “I have no problem saying ‘for me it is’, because I am giving my opinion and my opinion is not everyone’s, but it is the opinion of many people who want to keep the tradition, and do not want to lose this part of history , especially northeastern, so strong, so beautiful, that really moves a lot”, he added.
