Anyone who follows the turbulent dispute that has been fought in the courts over his heritage may lose sight of the strength that Gugu Liberato (1959-2019) had in Brazilian popular culture. Between the 1980s and 1990s, the presenter’s name was so strong that it ended up in comics.
In “Revista do Gugu”, the then presenter of Passa ou Repassa and Viva a Noite, which aired on Saturday nights on SBT, was always depicted with butter blonde hair, lighter than it actually was, and appeared in the most unusual situations.
Always carrying his traditional microphone, Gugu starred in completely fictional stories (and some quite nonsensical). After all, who would fight a werewolf wearing a suit? In one issue, he gained the air of “king of the jungles”, in an imitation of Tarzan with his redhead Jane, while in another he showed “the hard life of a superhero”.
It was also common for other celebrities of the time to appear in “special appearances”. In issue number 4, Sérgio Mallandro appears as a skater. The magazines also contained interviews with artists such as Angélica, Mara Maravilha and Simony, in addition to horoscopes, posters of artists and pastimes.
The comic appeared in 1988, published by Editora Abril, and lasted until 1990, with 20 editions in total. The currency at the time was the Cruzado and, nowadays, some editions are for sale for more than R$ 100 on resale sites on the internet. A true relic!
