On September 15, the emblematic venue for Athenians will reopen its doors to the public
A brilliant musical celebration will be staged on Friday, September 15, in the completely renovated space of the Municipal Theater of Lycabettus, which will reopen its doors to the public after 15 years.
The Municipality of Athens proceeded with the reconstruction of the emblematic Theater of Lycabettus, which is inextricably linked to the culture of Athens and the memories of the Athenians. The reconstruction is progressing and the Theater is taking shape exactly as the great architect Takis Zenetos had designed it, alongside the overall reconstruction of the Lycabettus hill.
The reopening of the city’s emblematic theater after 15 years is celebrated in September with a rich program and opens with a great concert dedicated to the great compositional work of Stavros Xarhakos.
The Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyiannis, said: “I am very happy that we are rebuilding the theater and it will be delivered ready to the residents and visitors of Athens with a wonderful festival! And it is honorable and moving that the opening of the Theater will be done by our great composer Stavros Xarhakos and his melodies will once again flood Lycabettus after 45 years!
Returning from our holidays, the Festival promises us that we will enjoy magical evenings and be entertained once again in this historical place – an emblem for the Athenians, a pole of culture and tourist development that we had missed. Along with the overall regeneration of the hill and its infrastructure, it will be a jewel for the capital and the whole country.”
A landmark concert in the annals of the city
The concert, which will mark the new era of cultural activity of the Municipal Theater of Lycabettus, will also be the return of Stavros Xarhakos to the theater after 45 years.
Upon his return to the Attic hill, Stavros Xarchakos will present the program “Celebration on Lycabettus” accompanied by a multi-member orchestra, which will render top moments of his career in new orchestrations.
They will be joined by four great voices of the Greek pentagram: Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Manolis Mitsias, Iro Saia, and Zacharias Karounis will perform songs by the great composeradding their own touch to this special evening.
The historic concert of ’78
In the summer of 1978, he had given eleven concerts in Lycabettus, on the occasion of the summer events of the EOT in Athens, strongly connecting his name with the specific place that emerged as a landmark of the Greek song of the post-political reality.
In these memorable musical performances, Stavros Xarchakos presented alternating programs playing everything from Vivaldi to folk songs.
In fact, some of these snapshots were recorded and collected on a disc released at the end of ’78 entitled “Xarhakos – On Lycabettus”.
