After short or long vacations, the prospect of returning to the closed city can become attractive to the art-loving, and not only, public, with artistic appointments that enter the agenda from the end of September.

In this way, APE-MPE gathered the first important exhibitions of the autumn that are expected in Eleonas, in the Butterfly factory, in the Benaki Museum of Piraeus, some others that continue and of course in Zappeion the anniversary Art Athina 2023.

In Eleonas from 29/09 to 10/12

The expected major exhibition “Elaionas ’23 – Chthonian and Anthropocene” examines the various critical and complex situations, the dipoles that dominate the region, the relationship between the past and the present and vice versa. Through the works of 35 artists and a rich public program, performances and actions. It is edited by journalist and museologist Dimitris Trikas.

It focuses on the Xthonian and the Anthropocene, the conflict but also the conversation of the two elements, with Eleonas as a point of fulfillment and reference.

The exhibition spaces are developed in the urban area where Marconi Street, as the “border” of the Municipality of Athens with the Municipality of Aigaleo, intersects the Holy Road. There are the archaeological site with the foundations of the ancient bridge of Kifissos, the Metro station, containers and warehouses on the adjacent STASY plot, the “Souzi Tros” site of Maria Papadimitriou, the neighborhood of Elaion, etc.

“In other words, we will find ourselves where the fertile soil of Eleonas of Peisistratos met, the fertile soil of rural Attica of recent years – up to the sixties – and the “dead land” handed over by the human use/economy of the last almost sixty years to the present day with the upcoming… “gentrification” of the area” states the curatorial note. “These spaces will function as fields of research and modern Wunderkammer, which through the works and discussions will narrate and interpret old and new stories of the people and the cities of the Sacred Way through the conversation and the co-existence in from the disasters and the transformations of the landscape and the human geography of the region”.

The public program of the exhibition will utilize the conversation of contemporary art, archival and photographic material from the wider region of the geologist, visual photographer Manias Benisi and Maria Papadimitriou, the scientific discourse of the speakers, with the aim of highlighting the stratigraphic background of of the Athenian metropolis and the anthropogenic imprint that continues to exist in the sense and body of the city.

At the Benaki Museum of Piraeus from 21/9 to 14/1/2024

The announced retrospective exhibition on the work of Giorgos Chatzimihalis will be presented in two parts, which will be extended to all the exhibition spaces of the building. PART ONE of the exhibition will run from 9/21 to 11/5 and PART TWO from 2/113 to 1/14/2024.

In the interim, specifically on the weekends of November 11, 12 and 18, 19, 2023, the exhibition space will remain open so that the public has the opportunity to watch the transition and experience the behind-the-scenes of setting up an exhibition.

The works record the artist’s 56-year creative journey. At the exhibition, works will also be presented to the public for the first time. George Hatzimichalis is one of the most important artists of his generation. His work is multifaceted and often consists of large sections. It investigates memory, the importance of the archive and the relationship between the past and contemporary visual reality. To create a work, he often uses many different media, alongside painting, such as video, photos, texts, prints, etc. The two-dimensional space of the painting expands into the third dimension and the resulting spaces allow the viewer to experience the image as it is shaped by the experience of life in the postmodern condition.
