One of the most iconic bands in the history of world music, Orchestra Baobab, is coming on Saturday 2 September to the Stavros Niarchos Park of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) to take us on a journey to the dance rhythms of the African continent, as part of the latest Parklife concert of the season.

The evening starts with a DJ set by Teranga Beat spreading psychedelic afro-jazz and funky-tropical sounds of Africa in Xefoto.

The story of Orchestra Baobab begins in the 60s in the heart of the Medina of Dakar. A formation that was initially the house band at the famous Baobab Club in Dakar, evolved into the biggest dance band on the African continent.

The legendary Orchestra Baobab, adored both in its homeland, Senegal, and around the world, 52 years after its founding, still brings to every place it visits its special blend, which mixes Afro-Latin and Cuban rhythms with the West African griot music.

She has over twenty studio albums to her credit, including 1982’s Ken Dou Werente, which is considered one of the top world music albums, while her collaborations with names such as Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club, the Cheikh Ibra Fam, Youssou N’Dour and Dave Matthews.

Over the last 20 years, going through a constant period of reconstruction and “second life”, through re-recordings, new releases and monumental concerts, Orchestra Baobab constantly finds itself reborn (literally, as many of the original members of the band have passed away, with the baton passed to their descendants) and confirms with every appearance its worldwide reputation.

The concert takes place with free admission thanks to the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
