Stathis Kalyvas’s mini-documentary series, “Disasters and Triumphs”, is a journey into our past, through seven great historical circles of our history that share common elements: ambitious plans, great catastrophes but also impressive triumphs.
On Thursday, January 27, in the 7th and last episode, the academic and writer Stathis Kalyvas investigates the events from 2004 until today.

The country’s participation in the euro will lead to a new period of economic growth and unprecedented prosperity. At the same time, however, there is a major challenge: the economy needs to be reorganized, public debt reduced, competitiveness increased and critical areas such as public administration, justice, health and education reformed. Only in this way will Greece be able to reduce its distance from the rich countries of Europe and ensure its prosperity. Otherwise, it will be vulnerable to the first storm.

Unfortunately, this opportunity will be lost and in 2010 the situation will be completely reversed for the worse in a way that no one dared to imagine until then. As the necessary reforms were constantly postponed, public debt soared and the competitiveness of the economy declined. Thus, when a global financial crisis erupts in 2008, the country will be taken deadly. Greece is essentially going bankrupt and its very position in Europe will be questioned. Like the previous disasters, the crisis of 2010 turns the world publicity in Greece.
Twelve years later, the facts are still fresh. Will we be able to transform this catastrophe into a triumph, as we have done in the past? The only sure thing is that to achieve this we will need to employ our intelligence, adaptability, hard work and extroversion, just as we did in the past.
