The ‘Skin Deep’ series runs through September 30 at Robert Fontaine Gallery, Miami Beach
Working against a painted backdrop of obsolete technology – floppy discs and VHS tapes – in his new series of works titled “Skin Deep” artist Nick Gentry questions performance and presence on the Internet, increasingly artificial standards of beauty, and the instability of memory over time.

Unlike his earlier portraits which were more faithful to the characteristics of his subjects, Gentry’s new work is deeply influenced by the virtual world. He often paints his figures without defining features and uses the plastic spools of tape to highlight their eyes. This fusion of human and machine evokes the cold, detached feeling associated with a cyborg and emphasizes the synthetic, camouflaged nature of identity on the Internet.
