Baz Luhrmann will preside over his jury 3rd Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia.
The event, which is fast becoming a leading festival and market in the region and a key driver in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing drive to build a TV and film production industry will be held from November 30 to December 9 in Jeddah, on the east coast of the Red Sea.
Baz Luhrmann, who has connected with global audiences thanks to films with well-known soundtracks such as ‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and the most recent biopic ‘Elvis’, will chair the jury of the Festival which will award awards to filmmakers from the Arab region, Asia and Africa participating in the competition section.
As we prepare for the Festival’s third year, we are delighted to welcome legendary award-winning director Baz Luhrmann as head of the jury, said Red Sea fest CEO Mohammed al-Turki, according to Variety. He praised the Australian director as a “pioneer of pop culture with incredible flexibility in all creative fields”.
Baz Luhrmann commented: “As a child in the local cinema we went to near the tiny country town where I grew up I was fascinated by the powerful historical and natural landscapes of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. Since then, I have had an abiding passion for the Arab world, but after visiting Saudi Arabia, I felt truly inspired by the remarkable young filmmaking talent emerging across the region and to see how they are now attracting the attention of the global film community.».
