‘There are remakes that if they do I will be very jealous’, says Renata Sorrah

The project to remake “Vale Tudo”, a plot produced in 1988 by Globo, divided opinions on the internet. For some, this is one of the greatest classics of Brazilian television drama and does not need an update, while others believe that the technological advances that have occurred since then justify a new visit to the text.

Renata Sorrah, 76, who stood out in the plot as Heleninha Roitman, appears to be from the first team. The actress says that the rich, alcoholic young woman is “one of the most incredible characters I’ve played” and that the plot “was one of the most beautiful novels that have ever been written.”

“When they do a remake it’s cool, [mas] There are remakes that if they do I’ll be very jealous (laughs)”, she says. “But when the soap opera comes on again, revisits the soap opera, I find it very interesting to watch. It’s a period document, there are some soap operas that we watch and say: ‘My God, I didn’t even have a cell phone’, ‘Look at the telephone, the television, the clothes’.”

Soon, Renata can be seen in another work she did with the author Gilberto Braga (1945-2021) —”Vale Tudo” was written in partnership with Aguinaldo Silva and Leonor Bassères. “I did great work with him, he wrote some wonderful soap operas and serials for Brazil”, she remembers. “He reinvented things, wrote iconic characters. He is sorely missed, sorely missed.”

This time, it’s “Pátria Minha”, written in collaboration with Alcides Nogueira, Leonor Bassères, Sérgio Marques and Ângela Carneiro, which debuts in the Globoplay catalog on October 9th. The 1994 plot featured the actress as Natália, a struggling woman and single mother.

“My character had a wonderful daughter, she worked outside the home and raised her daughter”, remembers Renata. “It was a very open, very true relationship, a very cool mother-daughter relationship.”

She gives an example of how this happened in practice. “I remember a story where her daughter was dating and she thought it was cool, she transformed her daughter’s room and gave her a double bed, because she thought it was better, given that her daughter was old enough to date and have a relationship”, he says.

Natália was the mother of the protagonist Alice, played by Cláudia Abreu, who she still talks about fondly today. “We remained friends and companions for the rest of our lives,” she says. “So, these encounters on a stage, on a television set, on a film set, are encounters of friendships for the rest of their lives. And with Cacau it was like that, with Cláudia Abreu, she is a one of the people I admire and like the most.”
