Their own “Summer Night Dream” will be uploaded in July 2022, in the Prespa National Park, by young people from Prespa, Thessaloniki and Ptolemaida, who are not yet known, but for the next six months will meet regularly with this common goal. .
Twelve young people aged 18-25 from these three areas will become a group – initially online and then live – with the ultimate goal of presenting a play: their own “Summer Night Dream” based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare and in fact in a forest, as the leading playwright had placed it.
“The fact that it will be played in a natural environment, on a summer night, this return of the play under the stars, seems magical to me”, says Tassos Ratzos, director – theater teacher, founder of the Theater Company to the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency ” Little North “.
Through online meetings – from next Saturday, February 5 to June – and from an intensive, live, ten-day camp in July in the three areas where the twelve young people come, the show “Journey to the dream” will be “born”. which will retain the central themes of Shakespeare’s classic work, namely love, the dream, the struggle and the agony for a better future.
With power from Prespa
The networking action “THES-PRESS”, which was implemented in 2019 on the subject of visual arts, chose this year to focus on the theater, as the youth of Prespa through the theatrical workshops, organized in recent years at the Municipal Library of Prespa, showed great interest in the theater and successfully staged two performances.
“Amateur theater tends to become a tradition for teenagers and young people in Prespa – a fact of particular importance for a remote area that is not exposed to cultural events”, points out Zenia Anastasiadou, from the Prespa Protection Society, coordinator of social and political activities of the multi-participatory program aimed at the development of Prespa “Poliprespa”.
Ms. Anastasiadou emphasizes that “THES-PRESS” was designed “taking into account the need of young people to externalize their accumulated energy creatively, to connect with their peers, to work as a team, to externalize their feeling and at the same time to get to know Shakespeare and his work. “Our approach is holistic, since theater is an art that includes all the others,” he points out.
The program will be attended by six young men and women from Prespa, three from Thessaloniki and three from an intermediate destination, Ptolemaida. “We believe that this interaction will work in a premium way for all three sides”, explains Martha Mavridou, animating PHD coordinator of “THES-PRESS”, while the other coordinator Tassos Ratzos points out that this is a creative construction and not a professional one.
The networking action is part of the “Poliprespa” program, managed by the Prespa Protection Company and implemented with a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The Communication Partner for the action “THES-PRESS” has been undertaken by the Laboratory of Digital Media and Strategic Communication of the Department of Communication and Digital Media of the University of Western Macedonia.
Connection with all of Greece
Along with the formation of the basic group of twelve young people, contacts are made with municipalities and cultural collectives throughout Greece, in order to make a call to groups of young people engaged in cultural activities and living in areas similar to Prespa – with the aim of creating, to suggest and present a small play about “Summer Night Dream” and Shakespeare.
“Our goal is to activate communication channels for young people with concerns, who live in areas like Prespa – that is, with a small population and distance from urban centers,” said Ms. Anastasiadou.
