Leonardo Volpato
Five years ago, Iza, 33, released her first major album, “Dona de Mim”, which showed Brazil the talent of the still somewhat shy singer, born in Olaria, in the North Zone of Rio. Since then, the maturation Artistic gave her more mechanisms to express herself, both in her art and in life.
“I went through a process of revolution to be able to talk about things that I didn’t feel so comfortable with before. I think that the Iza of 2018 and the one of 2023 are completely different”, he says to F5. The most recent album, “Afrodhit”, released in August, highlights this. In one of the songs (‘Exclusiva’), she is more daring and sexy in the lyrics that refer to sex, in another (‘Tédio’), she talks about a toxic and worn-out relationship.
Stabilized in Brazil, Iza states that she does not have an immediate plan to invest in an international trajectory. According to her, bureaucracy gets in the way. “I think about my career as a whole.”
If on the professional side everything is going well, in love… too. Dating football player Yuri Lima, from Mirassol, since February, the artist avoids talking about the future of the relationship (that talk of marriage, children, etc.), but says that he is the “most incredible man” she has ever met. “It’s great to be in love, to feel like I’m loving someone and being reciprocated”, adds the artist, who in October 2022 announced the end of her marriage with music producer Sérgio Santos.
How exciting is it to have your image projected in a campaign in Times Square, New York?
It’s amazing to be in Times Square. The first time I saw my image featured there I almost couldn’t believe it.
This year you celebrate five years of ‘Dona de Mim’. What has changed?
I understand that, since then, I have gone through a process of revolution to be able to talk about things that I didn’t feel so comfortable with before. I think the 2018 Iza and the 2023 Iza are completely different. On top of that, along the way, there was a pandemic and this artistically ended up influencing my creativity a lot.
What kind of influence?
I remember in 2018, I didn’t even know I was making an album. I needed to choose a song to release a single and I ended up making 14. I took it to the president of the record company. He said: ‘my love, this is an album. It has to be launched’. And so it was done.
Did the songs on ‘Dona de Mim’ represent your moment in life?
These songs were very important to me at that moment, they talked about getting up, going after it.
On your most recent album ‘Afrodhit’, you sing about other topics, such as toxic relationships
I believe it is a more vulnerable album. I’m at a point in my career where I’m less concerned about what others understand about my art. I understood that this is no longer my responsibility, you know? I feel more complete, more certain.
How involved are you when you launch a new project like this?
‘Afrodhit’ has just come out and we are working on the songs in shows, on the new tour. I like to be 100% involved. I come up with ideas for the clips, I like to take care of the creative direction, the production of the album. So it is a longer process for the production and launch of a work. I have many plans, many dreams.
Is investing in an international career in your plans?
People ask me a lot about this, but in all the international projects I was involved in, I never saw it as an investment in my career abroad. I always see it as an opportunity to make music with incredible artists, who I greatly admire. These are possibilities that music offers me.
Do you think it might still take some time to explore other markets?
A career outside Brazil needs many more things, an agent, a representative abroad, the entire structure that we have in Brazil. Of course I don’t rule out all of this, but I don’t aim for it. I think about my career as a whole.
You don’t hide the fact that you’re in love with your boyfriend, the player Yuri Lima…
As I say in one of the songs [‘Exclusiva’] from the album: ‘Falling in love again is always necessary’. It’s great to be in love, to feel like I’m loving someone and being reciprocated, it’s great to admire someone. I am happy.
After all, what did he have that left you with four tires down?
Yuri is light, dedicated to his work [joga no Mirassol], is the most incredible man I have met so far and he has done me a lot of good. He has made me feel light. And that’s what matters.
