The Hellenic Film Center bids farewell to Vassilis Vassilikos, in the following condolence message.

“The loss of Vassilis Vasilikos leaves a great void in modern Greek Culture, plunging the artistic world into sadness. Vassilis Vasilikos was one of the most important and most translated Greek writers in many languages of the world. He lived in Greece, France, Italy and New York, sometimes by free choice and sometimes by necessity – self-exiled due to the junta of the colonels. He was always an active citizen, militant and with a restless spirit, defending the values of the Republic.

“Z”, his emblematic novel with the theme of the murder of Grigoris Lambrakis, proved to be a strong cohesive link between literature and cinema, but also a milestone in the filmography of Kostas Gavras. Cinema and television absorbed some of his creativity. He worked with Nikos Koundouros for the script of the film “Little Venuses”, wrote scripts, shot a documentary. He also contributed significantly, as deputy general director of ERT, to the renewal of Greek television by promoting its opening to the broad horizon of fiction.

The Hellenic Film Center expresses its deepest condolences to his family.”
