South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyunfamous for his role in movie Parasiteswho had triumphed at the Oscars in 2020, was found dead and authorities believe she committed suicide, South Korea’s national Yonhap news agency reported today.

The 48-year-old actor was found dead inside a car in the center of the capital Seoul, Yonhap reported, citing police.

Lee Son-kyun was facing a police investigation as he was suspected of using cannabis and other psychoactive substances.

The scandal damaged his image as a successful actor, depriving him of television appearances and advertising contracts, according to several South Korean media outlets.

He was very successful with Parasitesplaying the role of the father of a rich family who is conned by a poor family to secure jobs.

In his latest film, titled Sleep, he plays the role of a sleepwalking husband who terrorizes his wife. It was presented out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

He spoke to reporters and cameras in late October after being questioned at a police station in the city of Incheon, near Seoul.

“I sincerely apologize for disappointing so many people by being involved in such an unpleasant incident,” he said say

“I feel sorry for my family, who are experiencing so much pain right now (…) Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone”he had added.

South Korean drug laws are draconian.

President Yoon Seok-geil earlier this year called for even tougher measures to stamp out drug trafficking — in a country where selling cannabis carries a life sentence.

It is indicative that prison sentences are even provided for those who return to South Korea after consuming cannabis in foreign countries where it is legal.
