Two years after the first upload – which was interrupted due to health conditions – the play “Moby Dick – the musical” by Dimitris Papadimitriou raises the curtain again, directed by Giannis Kakleas. Based on the fifth most widely read book in the history of mankind, Herman Melville’s masterpiece was transformed by Onassis Culture into an adventurous musical and philosophical spectacle for the whole family and from February 15 “sails” from the Christmas Theater stage.
In the press conference held on Tuesday, February 8 at the Christmas Theater on the occasion of the performances of “Moby Dick – The Musical” that begin in a few days, the creator of the play Dimitris Papadimitriou, describing the condition in which the play was written, pointed out that it is a production which serves the artistic result without any discount and absolute freedom in choices. “The crazier the idea, the easier it is to find companions,” he said, referring to both the director’s immediate response to the collaboration and the support from Onassis Culture.
The interval between the performances and the resumption of the performances, the composer said, among other things: “The voyages of Pickwond, the ship to Moby Dick, lasted up to three years. where he reopened without us, only with his ghosts and legends “.
The musical (adaptation-libretto and musical composition) by Dimitris Papadimitriou is a “whale” in size. A libretto of 29,198 words and 900.00 musical symbols in his score, 23 performers on stage and 12 live musicians, 430 hours of rehearsal and 250 hours of music teaching. Another 135 costumes, countless scene changes, 70 square holographic projection screen, 96 square LED display and impressive holographic projections and 3D videos come to give an unforgettable experience to the audience, harmonized with the world masterpiece of Herman Melville.
Regarding the way the director dealt with the play, the director Giannis Kakleas notes: or unfaithful, cruel or sensitive -, beyond and above all these contradictions. In this case, Melville seems to embody a tragic hero, an expiatory victim, such as Oedipus or Hamlet. Thinking of Ahab as a playwright in the history of theater, I also attempt a similar journey, while at the same time trying to highlight these unanswered questions, metaphysical or moral. A gamble, extremely irritating for a director, especially when confronted with a writer like Melville and with this ark of the world, the multicultural crew, the great and the great.

The direction of Giannis Kakleas brings to life the huge musical and theatrical work of Dimitris Papadimitriou on the largest theatrical stage of the city, with the live orchestra under the experienced direction of Alexios Priftis, the sets of Manolis Pantelidakis, the costumes of Elenia, the costumes of Elegnia Trombouki, the lighting of Stella Kaltsou accompanied by the impressive and new in the Greek theater holograms and 3D animation of Candyshop VFX (Evangelou Kouloukytha) in collaboration with Hashem Alshaer, Visual Effects Director of CandyshopVFX “The Division” and Art Direction video materials Stathis Athanassiou that surpass the hitherto known theatrical technological data.
