The 48-year-old actor was found dead last month and his death was ruled a suicide
“Parasite” director Bong Joon-ho and other representatives of the film industry in South Korea they asked to investigate the circumstances of the death of the actor Lee Son-Kyunone of the protagonists of the Oscar-winning film.
Last month, the 48-year-old actor was found dead and his death was ruled a suicide.
The Edson Police Department had launched an investigation into Lee for possible recreational drug use and the actor was at the center of a whirlwind of media and social media commentary two months before his death.
Supported by a team of artists, cultural organizations and workers’ unions, Bong called for an investigation into police methods and called on the media to question the coverage that may have contributed to Lee’s decision to kill himself. Public broadcaster KBS has come under fire for criticism.
Earlier this week, the newly formed Solidarity Association of Artists and Workers in Culture in a statement he called for an investigation into Lee’s death, according to The Korea Herald newspaper. He also urged the authorities to “review the legislation to protect the human rights of artists” to prevent similar deaths in the future.
The Association organized a press conference led by director Bong-joon-ho who worked with the actor on the film ‘Parasite’.
“I demand the authorities to conduct an investigation. We demand that the police investigate whether there has been a security lapse in the investigation since its details were first revealed,” Bong said, according to Variety. “We want to know if there was not a single contact with the media during the investigation and we want the results to be made public so there is no doubt.” he emphasized.
The police denied any negligence, however, the participants in the press conference strongly criticized the police procedures.
“His three appearances at the police, from the simple diagnostic test for the detection of narcotics, until the negative test, were broadcast live by the media. Recordings of his incriminating statements were released to the media and the public, and he made the tragic choice to end his life after a third police subpoena for a 19-hour deposition,” Bong said.
Lee was a well-known actor and recently appeared in the films ‘Project Silence’ and ‘Sleep’. The latter began showing in cinemas in September and topped the Korean box office charts for three weeks.
Lee was married to actress Jeon Hye-jin and had two children.
