The exhibition ‘Yuima Nakazato Beyond Couture’ will highlight how the Japanese designer’s work combines innovation, tradition and cutting-edge technology
The Japanese avant-garde fashion designer Yuima Nakazato is the focus of an exhibition to be hosted this year at the Lace and Fashion Museum in Calais, France.
The exhibition ‘Yuima Nakazato Beyond Couture’ will highlight how the Japanese designer’s work combines innovation, tradition and cutting-edge technology, as well as how he develops sustainable fashion inspired by haute couture creativity and traditional Japanese techniques.
Born in Japan in 1985, Yuima Nakazato graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium in 2008 and won several awards, including the 2008 Innovation Award for his graduate collection, which introduced the origami technique to fashion.

Since 2016, he has presented his collections twice a year in Paris during Haute Couture Fashion Week and is the second Japanese fashion designer, after Hanae Mori, to participate in the prestigious event in the French capital.
The exhibition will feature more than 50 creations from the designer’s collections from 2016 to 2024 and will reveal the designer’s progressive and sustainable approach and the techniques he uses from Eastern and Western craftsmanship, as well as inspiration mainly from nature, such as the song of the whales, the red lava of the volcanoes and the beauty of the landscapes.
The exhibition will run from June 15, 2024 to January 5, 2025.
