This year’s calendar is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Giuseppe e Pericle Lavazza Foundation
Every year since 1993, the Italian coffee company has created a photographic calendar, featuring images from artists such as Helmut Newton, David LaChapelle and Annie Leibovitz. This year’s edition celebrates the African continent as the birthplace of coffee (widely believed to be Ethiopia).
With works by three African photographers, of Thandiwe Muriu, Aart Verrips and Daniel Obasithis year’s calendar is dedicated to the Foundation’s 20th anniversary Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazzaa non-profit organization that supports international sustainability projects in coffee growing countries.
“I am excited about this particular work, because we are turning the eye and the conversation around Africa, this amazing continent. But the subject itself, for me, was so powerful.”said photographer Thandiwe Muriu.
Muriu was introduced to the world of photography at the age of 14 by her father. Her parents wanted to teach her and her three sisters this art so that they would become strong, independent women in an -often- patriarchal society.
“When he put the camera in my hand, something happened,” he told CNN. “I always liked art, but I could never draw. I’ve always loved music, but I could never sing. But the camera just felt right and it was almost like one of those moments in a movie. Photography just became the voice I was looking for to express everything I was feeling and experiencing.”.
Since then, she’s been perfecting her craft: from watching YouTube tutorials and reading photography magazines as a teenager, to meeting other photographers and learning from their experience while studying for a marketing degree.
Today, Muriu’s photographs focus on three absolute truths about herself, which she says shape the way she sees the world: “I am a woman, I am African and I love color”.

The theme of camaraderie is at the heart of every image produced for the calendar.
