Hot pants and shoulder pads should dominate looks at Carnival 2024; see tips on how to use

Hot pants, shoulder pads and fishnet tights are some of the trends that should dominate Carnival 2024 looks, especially as they are pieces that offer comfort, without leaving aside the vibrant colors and carnival style.

Data from Google Trends shows that these costumes tend to spark interest in searches during the festive months. Hot pants, for example, are pieces searched for by internet users at this time of year — and they continue to be on the rise this month. The same goes for shoulder pads.

According to Trends, tulle and sequin skirts have also seen an increase in search interest in the last 30 days.

• hot pants

For Diego Ribeiro, fashion professor at FAAP (Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado), hot pants combined with cropped tops will be the look of the moment. Furthermore, to complement this bottom piece, beaded tops – driven by the friendship bracelets exchanged at Taylor Swift shows – will also be a trend.

According to the professor, hot pants gained the public’s favor because they are a garment that brings freshness and because they are not as low-cut as bikini bottoms. “You have a little more coverage, always maintaining comfort for the festivities”, says Ribeiro.

For those who want to personalize the piece, the teacher recommends thinking about items such as cords to make ties or stones that you can apply with glue.

• Shoulder pads

Shoulder pads can be used to protect your shoulders against the sun, especially because the forecast for the days of revelry in São Paulo is very hot every day, with the possibility of rapid rain, typical of summer, in the late afternoons, according to the CGE (Climate Emergency Management Center) of São Paulo City Hall.

Just like hot pants, it is possible to customize the piece and apply chains, fringes or feathers to them.

“You can wear it with a crop top or even the bikini top itself, making it an easy costume for Carnival. You gain this aspect of comfort without losing the aesthetic side too”, says Ribeiro.

• Fishnets

This is another piece that will be a trend and is already an ally of women during Carnival. It can be shiny, colorful or in a woven pattern… Ribeiro remembers that this garment is good for preventing chafing and chafing on the legs.

“I see fishnet stockings as a striking visual interference in the look, which allows you to create a pattern for the lower part that goes beyond the skirt, be it tulle or sequins, without compromising freshness”, says Ribeiro.

• Tulle skirt

Stylist Caroll Falcão recalls that the piece is almost a Carnival heritage and is present in several Brazilian festivities. “It’s on the skirts of dancers and frevo dancers, and adds volume to the ‘matuta’s’ dress [na festa de] Saint John”, he says.

Furthermore, it is a piece that can be found in various colors and does not need to be customized to be used. But, if the person opts for customization, Ribeiro recommends attaching stones or satin ribbons.

The metallic sequin skirt is perfect for this year’s festivities, especially given Beyoncé’s Renaissance-era look. The artist was in Brazil in December 2023 to participate in a preview event for the documentary “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” in Salvador and wore a strapless dress with a side slit, all in silver sequins.

“The good thing about the sequin skirt is that you can, in a single look, carry color and shine. With this, it is possible to combine a cleaner upper part, using a bikini in a solid color or with some print, and thus stand out the lower part, playing with the shine of the sequins”, teaches Ribeiro.
