Olynthos

The ancient city of Olynthos was founded, according to Herodotus, in the middle of the 7th century. e.g. by the Vottians and in 479 BC. was destroyed by the Persians. In 432 BC the Macedonian King Perdiccas II convinced the inhabitants of many coastal cities of Halkidiki to settle in Olynthos, which became the most populous and richest city in the region. It played a leading role in the political events of Halkidiki until 348 BC, when it was completely destroyed by Philip II. The city is built on the northern hill according to the hippodamian system. During the excavation survey (1928-1938) by the American School of Archaeology, the largest part of the city was investigated and one of the best examples of urban planning and residential architecture (more than 100 dwellings) from the classical era came to light. Public buildings were located in the southern part of the hill. In the southeastern part, outside the walls of the city, its newest sector was located, built after 379 BC, also with the hippodamian system, where rich residences were found with conventional names such as Mansion of Good Fortune, of the Actor, of the Twin Loves , adorned with impressive mosaic floors.
