The Oscar-winning French actress Juliette Binos takes over from the Polish director Agnieszka Holland and assumes the presidency of the European Film Academy.

It is noted that the Ingmar Bergman he was the first president to be initially chosen from the Academy’s 40 founding members in 1989.

Wim Wenders succeeded the Swedish director in 1996 and served until 2020, followed by Holland, who became the first female president until she decided to step down.

“I’m not one to back down easily, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m first and foremost a director. And that’s what I want to focus on in the coming years…for me, it’s time to leave,” notes Agnieszka Holland.

“Knowing that Juliette Binoche is willing to take over reinforces my feeling that this is a decision made at the right time. I could not have wished for a better successor, as she has represented European cinema so strongly and convincingly throughout her impressive career.”

According to Variety, the French star officially begins her honorary new role on May 1 after her nomination was unanimously approved by Academy members.

The actress recently starred in the Cannes drama The Taste of Things, which won Best Director for Tran An Hung, and plays Coco Chanel in the AppleTV+ miniseries The New Look.
