One of the most historic schools in the wider Mediterranean area was transformed into a Multi-Cultural Center.

This is the building of the 1st Primary School of Spaton, whose construction began in 1928 and its operation immediately after, however it remained closed for several years, since the student community was moved to new facilities two decades ago.

The building in the “heart” of the city and inextricably linked to the history of the place, belongs as property to the Municipality of Spata-Artemida and the municipal authority envisioned its “rebirth” as a place of culture and traditional heritage. The school rooms were turned into museum spaces, where traditional costumes of more than a century, objects from the rural life of Spata, as well as archaeological findings are exhibited, while the city library also moved into the building.

There will now be an event hall on the upper floor, so that the historic building becomes a “living” cultural cell for the city.

Its repair and full equipment was co-financed by the Action “Creative Reuse of Municipal Real Estate” of the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPANEK 2014-2020) with resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, while many of the traditional exhibits are a donation from the residents of Spata.

Today, the inauguration took place and the mayor Dimitris Markou, who envisioned all of this, emphasized among other things: “With great joy and honor, we stand in this space to celebrate the inauguration of a new cultural space, which highlights our heritage and the historical importance of our municipality. The restoration of the historic building of the 1st Primary School of Spaton is a milestone for our local community. A multi-purpose space that brings history, art, and education to life.” And he added: “It is reviving as a space, which will not simply combine tradition with heritage and innovation, but will function as a space of osmosis, thought and ideas, a pole of social meeting and shaping the identity of a society, which will lead our city in further development”.
