The exhibition includes a total of twelve costumes from the film, as worn by Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and the other actors
The Benaki Museum presents for the summer of 2024 the exhibition: “Poor Things. The suits“, giving the audience the opportunity to admire up close the extraordinary costumes of the award-winning film by Giorgos Lanthimos.
The exhibition will last from June 12 to September 29 2024 and includes twelve of the original handmade costumes by Holly Waddington for George Lanthimos’ film Poor Things, as worn by Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Vicki Pepperdine, Kathryn Hunter and Jerrod Carmichael.
The exhibition will be inaugurated at the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture by the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, while the Oscar and BAFTA award-winning costume designer of the film Holly Waddington will attend the opening event.
The movie
Based on the acclaimed novel by Alasdair Gray – brought to the big screen by the award-winning director of The Favorite and The Lobster – Poor Things chronicles the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone, who was awarded an Oscar for this performance), of a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).
Eager to learn and experience all that life has to offer, Bella hits it off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and corrupt lawyer, on a crazy adventure across continents. Freed from the prejudices of her time, Bella dedicates herself to her cause, to be a role model for equality and liberation.
Poor Things won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The film also won four Academy Awards® and five BAFTAs, including costume design for Holly Waddington.
The suits
A total of twelve costumes from the film are included in the exhibition. Six of them dressed the characters of: Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef), Harry Astley (Jerrod Carmichael), Madam Swiney (Kathryn Hunter) and Mrs Prim (Vicki Pepperdine) . The remaining six were worn by Emma Stone, who played the film’s heroine Bella Baxter, and chart her character’s development over the course of this idiosyncratic “apprenticeship” story.
“The hardest thing for me when working on Poor Things was finding a way to change the costumes and make sure they followed Bella’s journey,” says Holly Waddington in an interview.
The six Bella costumes that the public can admire at the Athens exhibition highlight the magical way in which this difficulty was overcome.
The ingenuity of the film’s costumes lies in the wonderful balance between the costumes of the era in which the action is set and the modern elements with which the costume designer grafts her creations, in a constant conversation with the director George Lanthimos. “We pushed the ideas to the limit, following George’s prompting for a storm of creativity,” Waddington said in an interview.
