His film debut Andrew Garfield alongside Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Tom Cruise in the film “Lions for Lambs” (2007) gave us a glimpse of his career.

Just five years after his debut, the actor was a global star, a direct consequence of joining the Hollywood superhero club. In his case, this was thanks to Spider-Man. Despite the fact that he has “built” a multifaceted career and is known for playing all kinds of roles, for many he remains the most lovable Spider-Man.

With each new film, Garfield tackles new areas and now, in his 40s, he is considered a sure bet for producers and directors.

Acclaimed by critics and loved by audiences, he is both the perfect partner for the next generation of Hollywood stars such as Florence Pugh and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and an actor who can stand alongside Julia Roberts. In fact, according to “The Hollywood Reporter”, this summer the actor will begin working with Roberts in Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, the thriller “After the Hunt”. And, judging by the Italian director’s other films (check out his latest film ‘Challengers’), the new film will cause a sensation.

Understated, but always “present” on the red carpet, Garfield enters a new professional stage. And with a Tony Award, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and two Oscar nominations under his belt, he’s made it clear he’s not afraid of challenges.

Garfield was born in Los Angeles, but at the age of three his family moved to the United Kingdom, the birthplace of his mother and grandparents (his father, Richard Garfield, is from California). He spent his early years there. Nothing in his life indicated that he would become an actor: what interested him as a child and teenager was sports.

Thanks to his mother he discovered the theater and everything changed. “He had the courage to see that I was having a very difficult time. I was an athlete, but all that fell by the wayside. I got concussed three times playing rugby. I didn’t follow swimming. I just stopped growing”, he said in an interview with the “Irish Times”. His mother, who died in 2019, encouraged him to find his niche through acting.

“I realized I needed to be on stage with these freaks and crazy people who were creating worlds out of nothing. That’s exactly where I wanted to be.”he said of his start.

He studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, and his training soon paid off. At the age of 23, he landed his first leading role in ‘Boy A’, a film about second chances, in which he plays a young man who has just been released from prison for a crime he committed during his childhood. For his performance, he won a BAFTA award in 2008.

This success could have been rookie luck if not for what happened next: before turning 30, he landed a “key role” in “The Social Network,” David Fincher’s origin-inspired film of Facebook, which became one of the biggest hits of the 2010s. And then the Spider-Man explosion of 2012 began. “I sensed the danger to myself, in terms of reputation and exposure”the actor told “GQ,” explaining how he felt about accepting the role at age 26 after beating out stars like Joe Jonas and Josh Hutcherson.

Media interest in the actor was not only about his acting: during the filming of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, he began dating Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy in the film. The couple dated for four years until 2015, making few public appearances apart from those required to promote their films.

“There is so much love between us and so much respect”she said on the “Vanity Fair” podcast in 2017, saying they maintained a good relationship after their split. “I’m her biggest fan as an artist”.

In 2017, the actor made a decision that hardly anyone would make. He left Los Angeles and moved temporarily to London to star in “Angels in America,” Tony Kushner’s cult AIDS play. In 2018, he made his Broadway debut in the same play and received a Tony Award, the first of his career.

He prefers to be known for his work rather than his personal relationships, but that doesn’t mean the media isn’t preoccupied with his new relationship with Kate Thomas. Of course, the actor knows how to use the publicity and is one of the few Hollywood-based artists who has taken an open stand against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
